STATEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ASED

Western Sahara, the former Spanish colony, is situated in north-west Africa.

The Moroccan Mauritania invasion of the territory in 1975 forced dozens of thousands of the Saharawis to live in exile in refugee camps near Tindouf in south-west Algeria.

In 1976 the Saharawis proclaimed their own state, the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), in the liberated zones of the territory.

During these 30 years of exile, several hundreds of young Saharawis graduated in different specialties of engineering. They live currently in the refugee camps and because of the conditions of exile they remain unemployed. These conditions are characterised by the lack of material equipments that could help them practice, promote and develop their specialities within a context of dynamic professional relations.

On 15 March 2007 we met in Bir Lehlou, in the liberated territory of the SADR, to establish our association,: the Association of Saharawi Engineers for Development (ASED).

The reasons for establishing the association are as follows:

Awareness of the need to valorise the importance of the role played by the engineers in the development of society and promoting the scientific and technical culture.

The Association is born of the will of the engineers to create an institution that would meet their aspirations.

The objectives of the ASED are as follows:

1.  To establish a grouping of Saharawi engineers.

2. To consolidate friendly relations between the fellow members.

3. To confront the idleness of the engineers and to contribute to the development of our society.

 4. To establish contact between Saharawi engineers and engineers’ associations around the world.

5. To promote the engineers’ skills in different domains through:

- The establishment of study centres, workshops, laboratories, etc.

- The organisation of seminars and meetings on the scientific issues of importance to the refugees (water, agriculture, environment…)

- To go on professional training and retraining.

6. To improve the life conditions of the Saharawis by engaging in productive activities (small cooperatives, agro-pastoral projects, maintenance of computer equipments, construction units, etc…)

The General Secretariat is composed of:

1 - A Board comprising a president, vice-president, secretary and a treasurer.

2 - Heads of scientific sections.

3 - representatives of the Association in the wilaya

The provisional General Secretariat invites all Saharawi engineers to join the association and to take part in the coming General Assembly.
