STATEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ASED

Western Sahara, the former Spanish colony, is situated in north-west Africa. The Moroccan Mauritania invasion of the territory in 1975 forced dozens of thousands of the Saharawis to live in exile in refugee camps near Tindouf in south-west Algeria. In 1976 the Saharawis proclaimed their own state, the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), in the liberated zones of the territory.

During these 30 years of exile, several hundreds of young Saharawis graduated in different specialties of engineering. They live currently in the refugee camps and because of the conditions of exile they remain unemployed. These conditions are characterised by the lack of material equipments that could help them practice, promote and develop their specialities within a context of dynamic professional relations.

On 15 March 2007 we met in Bir Lehlou, in the liberated territory of the SADR, to establish our association,: the Association of Saharawi Engineers for Development (ASED).

The reasons for establishing the association are as follows:

Awareness of the need to valorise the importance of the role played by the engineers in the development of society and promoting the scientific and technical culture.

The Association is born of the will of the engineers to create an institution that would meet their aspirations.
